The Canadian government announced on Thursday the killing of one of its citizens in Iran at the hands of “Iranian authorities,” against the backdrop of ongoing popular protests in the country for nearly three weeks.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated in a post on the X platform that she had learned of the killing of a Canadian citizen by Iranian authorities, adding that “the peaceful protests of the Iranian people, demanding to be heard in the face of the Iranian regime’s repression and its continuous violations of human rights, have led the regime to flagrantly disregard human life.”

Anand emphasized that Canada “strongly condemns the violence of the Iranian regime” and demands “its immediate end,” expressing her condolences to the victim’s family during this “difficult time.”

A Canadian Foreign Ministry official told Agence France-Presse (AFP), on condition of anonymity, that authorities believe the Canadian citizen was killed by Iranian security forces during one of the demonstrations. He added that officials from the Canadian consulate are in direct contact with the victim’s family in Canada to provide the necessary support.

In a separate statement, Global Affairs Canada called on all Canadians in Iran to “leave the country immediately if they can do so safely,” noting that the number of Canadian citizens residing in Iran is estimated at approximately 3,000 people.

These developments come amidst an unprecedented escalation of popular protests within Iran. The U.S.-based Iranian human rights agency, HRANA, reported that at least 2,600 people have been killed as a result of the widespread security crackdown since the outbreak of demonstrations in late December.

The protests in Iran began in late December 2025 due to the deterioration of the local currency’s value and the worsening economic crisis. The spark ignited in the capital, Tehran, before quickly spreading to several cities and provinces.
