Massive Fire in France Engulfs Historic Building Dating Back 143 Years

Limoges City Hall in France had stood since 1883, before being engulfed by flames yesterday during acts of violence accompanying protests over the rising cost of living. The incident brought together social anger and the loss of one of the city’s historic landmarks.

Images of the fire showed flames rising from the 143-year-old building, with extensive damage to its roof and upper sections. Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted local authorities as saying that individuals had smashed the building’s windows and broken in before setting it on fire.

The blaze occurred during a large day of protests across France, with approximately 550,000 people taking part, according to the Interior Ministry, while organizers estimated the number of participants at around 800,000.

The protests began with demands for improved education conditions and the provision of more teachers, before expanding to include wages, fuel prices and public services. Several cities witnessed peaceful marches, while clashes and looting broke out in other areas, alongside the burning of cars and buildings.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that approximately 1,200 people had been detained and 150 police and gendarmerie officers injured, according to the latest figures. The government affirmed citizens’ right to peaceful protest and pledged to pursue those responsible for fires and assaults. This comes at a time when police are facing scrutiny over their use of force, following reports of serious injuries among protesters.

Cost-of-living protests also spread to other European cities. Milan, Italy, witnessed demonstrations accompanied by clashes and acts of vandalism, while clashes erupted during youth protests in Brussels.

Despite similarities in some of the demands, the motivations and circumstances behind these demonstrations vary from one country to another, making it premature, based on the available information, to consider them part of a unified European protest movement.
