Venezuela Disaster Worsens as Race Against Time Continues to Rescue Survivors Trapped Beneath the Rubble
Venezuela continues to face one of the worst natural disasters in its modern history after the death toll from the two recent earthquakes rose to at least 1,450, with more than 3,200 people injured, according to authorities. Search and rescue operations continue amid growing fears that the chances of finding survivors are diminishing as time passes.
Although rescue teams have managed to pull 33 people alive from the rubble over the past few days, tens of thousands remain listed as missing, while emergency and rescue crews race against time to reach those trapped beneath collapsed buildings before the critical survival window closes.
Thousands Missing as Rescue Efforts Race Against Time
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez stated that estimates indicate thousands of people remain trapped beneath the debris of collapsed buildings, emphasizing that rescue teams continue their operations despite the declining likelihood of finding survivors with each passing hour.
He explained that the two earthquakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale and struck the country consecutively on Wednesday. They were followed by approximately 430 aftershocks, further complicating rescue operations and increasing the risks faced by teams working in the disaster-stricken areas.
Despite these conditions, American and French rescue teams successfully pulled a man and his teenage son alive from beneath the rubble in the coastal city of Caraballeda, an operation that renewed hope of finding more survivors even as the odds continue to diminish over time.
Thousands of specialized rescue personnel from Venezuela, along with rescue teams from 24 countries, are participating in the search operations, continuing their work amid widespread destruction and ongoing aftershocks that hinder access to many locations.
As part of the emergency response, authorities have deployed around 30,000 Venezuelan emergency personnel to the disaster zones, in addition to 2,700 international rescue experts equipped with specialized equipment and trained search dogs, in one of the largest relief operations the country has ever witnessed.
Massive Destruction and a Growing Humanitarian Crisis
The coastal state of La Guaira and the capital, Caracas, have suffered the greatest share of the destruction, with high-rise residential buildings and vital facilities collapsing, while entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, leading to rising numbers of casualties and missing persons and further complicating relief efforts.
Disaster management experts warn that the window for finding survivors is rapidly narrowing more than 72 hours after the earthquakes struck, a period considered critical for rescue operations, raising growing concerns about the fate of thousands still trapped beneath the debris.
According to the latest official assessment, more than 2,500 residential buildings and various facilities have either collapsed or sustained severe damage, including approximately 780 homes and 38 hospitals, placing additional strain on the healthcare sector and disrupting the delivery of essential services to the injured and affected population.
Alongside rescue efforts, humanitarian aid deliveries continue after Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez announced that 24 countries had sent hundreds of tons of relief supplies, in addition to dozens of rescue teams to support the emergency response.
This disaster comes at a time when Venezuela is already facing severe economic and humanitarian challenges, increasing the burden on authorities as they attempt to contain the consequences of the two earthquakes. Preliminary United Nations estimates indicate that the damage amounts to approximately $7 billion, equivalent to nearly 6% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), while authorities and international teams continue clearing debris and securing the affected areas amid expectations that the final death toll will rise as search operations continue and the full scale of the destruction becomes clear.
