The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia announced their agreement to postpone the 2029 Asian Winter Games (“Asiad 2029”) to a date to be determined later, replacing it in the current stage by holding a number of individual winter championships in the Kingdom. This step aims to promote winter sports and build a base of practitioners and enthusiasts for these sports, as well as to allow more time to prepare for the participation of a larger number of athletes from the Kingdom and the West Asia region in winter competitions in the future.
This decision comes from the principle of full cooperation and strategic coordination between the two sides, within the framework of the solid partnership that brings them together, and their keenness to support the development of sport in the region in general and the future of winter sports in particular. The Olympic Council of Asia praised the efforts made in the Kingdom to build sustainable plans for winter sports, stressing that the agreed-upon strategic direction prioritizes the interest of the future of winter sports in Asia and will contribute to implementing appropriate technical progression to begin a new phase in the world of these sports in West Asia.
The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee confirmed the Kingdom’s continued commitment to developing sports in its various paths, including winter sports, through athlete development programs, improving infrastructure, and hosting a group of events and championships on ice. This is to enhance the Kingdom’s presence in the sports sector, which is one of its national priorities and goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
