A Positive Start for Tottenham Takes Them Out of the Premier League Relegation Zone

A positive start for Tottenham has lifted them out of the Premier League relegation zone after a 2–1 victory over Aston Villa in a match played on Sunday. The win helped move them out of the danger zone in the overall English Premier League table.

This important victory comes as part of Tottenham recording three consecutive league wins for the first time since the start of the season.

With three weeks remaining in the 2025–26 season, the battle to avoid relegation appears set to go down to the wire in a highly tense finish.

At present, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and Burnley have already been relegated to the Championship for next season, while the final relegation spot is still undecided.

West Ham’s 3–0 victory over Brentford in a match played on Saturday opened the door for Tottenham to move out of the bottom three, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side managed to take full advantage of the situation.

Former Manchester City midfielder Micah Richards said on BBC Match of the Day: “It’s a brilliant start for Tottenham. I didn’t expect it at all.”

He added: “Aston Villa were very poor, but Tottenham, from the first minute to the last, made excellent use of the situation with their spirit, energy, and determination. They were outstanding in the system they were set up in and performed very well.”

He continued: “We often get predictions wrong—but West Ham are now facing a lot of pressure. They have many challenges ahead.”

He concluded: “Tottenham may have some momentum now, and they have set their standards in terms of performance. Roberto De Zerbi deserves a lot of credit. None of his players hid; they gave full confidence and effort.”

Former England striker Alan Shearer also said: “They won every second ball, every part of the game, and at times kept things simple to avoid mistakes.”

He added: “You need every player to work extremely hard when things are difficult, and Tottenham did exactly that. It has been a very bad week for West Ham.”

Nottingham Forest, who are currently 16th in the table and have played a different number of matches compared to Tottenham and West Ham, could move six points clear of the relegation zone with a win against Chelsea in a match scheduled for Monday (15:00 BST).

Leeds United are currently 14th in the table with 43 points, while Crystal Palace follow them on goal difference and also have a game in hand. This suggests the battle may come down to three teams: Nottingham Forest, West Ham, and Tottenham.
