A river drying up in the Middle East sparks widespread speculation and circulating prophecies about the end of the world | UN News

The rapid decline of the Euphrates River, historically known as one of the rivers of the “Cradle of Civilization,” is raising concerns among some believers in end-of-world prophecies. Some have linked the current situation to passages found in the Bible, according to the New York Post.

Some point to a verse from the Book of Revelation that says: “Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East,” considering the river’s drying up as a possible sign of “end times” events.

Some Christians have also historically linked this verse to the crossing of a massive eastern army over the Euphrates toward the battle of Armageddon, the great confrontation believed to precede the second coming of Christ. The Euphrates was also mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah with the phrase: “A drought on her waters, and they will dry up.”

The Euphrates River stretches for nearly 1,800 miles from the mountains of eastern Turkey through Syria and Iraq across the Fertile Crescent before joining the Tigris River and flowing toward the Gulf. However, its water levels have witnessed a significant decline in recent years.

Despite these religious interpretations, experts emphasize that the crisis is primarily due to environmental and climate-related factors such as drought, climate change, and excessive consumption of water resources.
