Pakistan Reaffirms Its Defensive Role with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye
Pakistan’s Prime Minister “Shehbaz Sharif” pledged on Monday to continue working and coordinating with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, affirming his country’s readiness to «play a constructive role in defending our country and the region», as he put it. This came following the positive positions announced by U.S. President “Donald Trump” regarding the signing of the «Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement».
“Trump” welcomed on Sunday the signing of the agreement by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan, describing it as a «big, bold, and extremely important step», referring to what it represents as a development in the course of defense cooperation among the three countries.
The U.S. president said in a post on his platform «Truth Social» that he was pleased with the three countries signing the agreement, considering that the «Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement» reflects the growing rapprochement among Middle Eastern countries and the region’s move toward strengthening joint cooperation, enabling them to develop their ability to protect their security and defend themselves more effectively.
In response, “Shehbaz Sharif” expressed his appreciation for the U.S. position, stressing the importance of the support expressed by “Trump” for the agreement. He said in a post on his account on the «X» platform: «We greatly appreciate the kind words of support expressed by President “Donald Trump” regarding the signing of the Mutual Defense Agreement for Makkah Al-Mukarramah».
The Pakistani prime minister added that his country would continue, in cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye, to play an active role in enhancing the security of the three countries and the region as a whole, saying: «In cooperation with the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye, Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in ensuring the defense of our countries as well as the entire region».
Sharif Praises Trump’s Role in South Asia
In a related context, “Sharif” once again praised what he described as the U.S. president’s decisive role in preventing a dangerous escalation in South Asia, considering that “Trump’s” actions contributed to avoiding what he described as a «nuclear catastrophe» and saving the lives of millions.
The Pakistani prime minister stated: «I would also like to once again commend President Trump for his courageous and decisive leadership, which helped avert a nuclear catastrophe in South Asia and saved the lives of millions», adding that «lasting peace is the most important essential condition for a bright and prosperous future for our peoples».
These statements come following the signing of the «Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement» in Makkah Al-Mukarramah between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan, in a step aimed at strengthening defense cooperation among the three countries and establishing a framework for collective deterrence, in a manner that supports security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
The agreement was signed during a summit that brought together Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince “Mohammed bin Salman”, Turkish President “Recep Tayyip Erdoğan”, and Pakistani Prime Minister “Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif”, where the leaders reviewed the nature of the relations between their countries and discussed a range of regional and international issues of common interest.
In its broader context, the agreement reflects the three countries’ efforts to expand areas of coordination and cooperation in defense and security matters, amid the rapid changes taking place in the region, while the U.S. welcome adds a political dimension to the agreement and underscores the growing interest in regional coordination on security and defense issues.
