The Israeli military has announced the appointment of the first commander of its Space Brigade, in a move aimed at expanding Israel’s military capabilities in the space domain.
The website i24NEWS, citing the Israeli newspaper Walla, reported that Israeli military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had appointed the first commander of Israel’s space force. The officer had previously headed Unit 9900, which belongs to the Military Intelligence Directorate and specializes in visual and geographic intelligence, as well as satellite imagery analysis.
The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, will oversee the implementation of major military projects related to space, develop the new brigade’s capabilities and strengthen its operational readiness.
According to Israeli reports, the new commander is highly regarded by senior officials within the Military Intelligence Directorate and the Israeli military.
For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed the establishment of the Space Brigade, describing the move as part of a policy aimed at transforming Israel into a military and security power in the space domain. He called it “Star Wars in blue and white,” referring to the colors of the Israeli flag.
In a post on X, Katz said he welcomed the military’s decision to establish the brigade as part of the policy he has been working to advance. He added that the military and defense establishment’s stated objective is to make Israel one of the world’s leading countries in military space capabilities.
He explained that the ability to monitor, defend against and attack targets from space across vast geographical areas would strengthen Israel’s regional and international standing, deter both nearby and distant adversaries, and ensure its security for future generations.
Katz noted that the development of military space capabilities would have implications beyond security and defense, extending to the Israeli economy by supporting research and development, entrepreneurship and production in advanced sectors with a global standing.
