Qatar confirms continuation of mediation efforts… talks with US envoys on Iran and regional stability

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, reviewed on Tuesday with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner the latest developments in ongoing talks between the United States and Iran within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed between both sides, in addition to regional developments and efforts aimed at strengthening security and stability through diplomatic channels.

The meeting came at a time when political movements aimed at consolidating calm in the region continue, amid efforts to make progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran following the understanding that ended military confrontations and opened the door to a new phase of negotiations.

According to the Qatar News Agency, the meeting also addressed recent regional developments, foremost among them the ceasefire in Lebanon, where both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining calm and building upon it in a way that preserves Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, and prevents a return to escalation.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman affirmed Qatar’s continued role as a mediator and its support for all dialogue tracks stemming from the memorandum of understanding, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable settlement that contributes to enhancing regional security, safeguarding the interests of its peoples, and supporting international peace and security.

For their part, the two US envoys expressed Washington’s appreciation for Qatar’s role, in coordination with Pakistan, in facilitating the negotiation process, affirming the United States’ commitment to continuing its diplomatic approach and working toward reaching a comprehensive agreement between the two sides.

Diplomatic movements and mixed messages

These talks come in parallel with statements by US President Donald Trump, who said on Tuesday that the expected meeting between the United States and Iran in the Qatari capital Doha this week “could be important, or it may not be,” without providing further details regarding the nature of the meeting or the level of participants.

In contrast, Tehran denied the existence of any upcoming negotiations with the US side in the coming days, reflecting continued discrepancies in statements regarding the negotiation process.

The spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majed Al-Ansari, had previously stated on Monday that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are indeed in Doha to hold meetings with mediators and follow up on the negotiation file, while also confirming that no high-level meeting with the Iranian side is currently scheduled.

Strait of Hormuz and frozen Iranian funds

In a related context, Al-Ansari explained that the frozen Iranian funds held in Qatar, amounting to six billion dollars, have not yet been transferred to Tehran, noting that they remain subject to the arrangements stipulated in the 2023 agreement and are exclusively designated for the purchase of humanitarian goods.

He also clarified that a direct communication channel had been used in recent days to help ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and contain confrontations in the region, noting continued coordination with the Sultanate of Oman regarding ensuring maritime security and safe passage for vessels through the strait.

These developments come after Washington and Tehran agreed to halt renewed attacks despite the memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June, which aimed to end the war and create conditions for resuming the political track.

The memorandum, in which both Qatar and Pakistan played a mediating role, established a 60-day negotiation framework aimed at reaching a final agreement addressing outstanding issues between both sides, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to consolidate calm and prevent the return of tensions to the region.
