Muscat maintains its commitment to international law in managing the strait
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi affirmed that the Sultanate of Oman does not support imposing any fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that any future arrangements related to the management of the waterway must comply with the provisions of international law, amid ongoing discussions about the future management of the strait.
Commitment to international maritime law
Albusaidi explained that the Sultanate is committed to international maritime law, which does not permit the imposition of fees on international sea lanes, emphasizing that Oman and Iran agree that any future arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz should remain within the framework established by international law.
Meetings to discuss the future management of the strait
The Omani foreign minister’s remarks came after the first meeting of the Joint Omani-Iranian Committee on the Strait of Hormuz, held in the capital, Muscat, and dedicated to exchanging views on the future management of the shipping lane.
Following a visit by Iranian officials to Muscat, Oman and Iran had announced their intention to work toward reaching an agreement on the future management of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as discussing the related services and costs, according to a joint statement.
Omani clarification regarding transit fees
Muscat later stressed that the arrangements related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz do not include imposing any transit fees on ships, while also confirming the opening of a temporary maritime corridor as part of an initiative coordinated with the United Nations.
Meanwhile, Iran continues to advocate for the joint management of the Strait of Hormuz with the Sultanate of Oman and is seeking, according to official announcements, to establish a mechanism for imposing what it describes as “service fees” on cargo vessels in exchange for regulating maritime traffic, a move that could provide it with additional revenue.
