Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly received an unexpected gift during the opening of the “Turathna 2026” handicrafts and heritage exhibition in Cairo: a Turkish official presented him with a jersey belonging to Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah, who joined Trabzonspor this year.
Ahmet Taşan, a Turkish deputy director-general for family and social services who hails from Trabzon, presented the jersey to Madbouly as he toured the Turkish pavilion at the exhibition, in a gesture that caught the attention of attendees. The prime minister appeared delighted as he received the maroon-and-blue jersey bearing the name of Egypt’s national team captain.
The gift attracted the attention of Turkish media. The Trabzon-focused news website 61saat published a report detailing how the jersey was presented to Madbouly, highlighting his reaction and the gesture that drew attention during his visit to the Turkish pavilion.
The gift came on the sidelines of the eighth edition of the “Turathna 2026” exhibition, held at the Egypt International Exhibition Center from October 17 to 24, with Turkey participating for the first time.
Just days earlier, Salah had helped Trabzonspor secure a 4–2 victory over Finnish side KuPS in the opening round of the UEFA Conference League, scoring one goal and providing an assist to give his team an important away win ahead of its domestic league match against Beşiktaş on Monday.
Since joining Trabzonspor this summer, Salah has attracted extensive media attention in Turkey, with observers watching closely to see how the Egyptian star’s presence will affect the club’s popularity and the city’s standing as a sporting and tourism destination.
The interest in Salah has also extended to tributes outside the football pitch. Mustafa Bıyık, mayor of Yomra in Trabzon, announced that a street where the player’s home is located in the Kaşüstü area would be named after him.
Tributes to the Egyptian star have also reached the arts, with a large mural depicting him wearing the club’s jersey painted in the city of Trabzon.
