Egypt and Saudi Arabia Step Up Efforts to Contain Regional Escalation and Promote Dialogue

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, discussed ways to contain the current crisis in the region during a phone call held on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two sides discussed efforts to prevent escalation amid growing risks in recent days, as well as ways to advance political and peaceful solutions through dialogue.

The two ministers agreed to continue consultations and close coordination at the bilateral level and within the framework of the quadrilateral ministerial mechanism comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan.

This comes after the Egyptian parliament approved, by a two-thirds majority of its members, a mandate authorizing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to take the necessary measures, in coordination with Saudi Arabia, to strengthen the Kingdom’s defenses.

It also follows a meeting on Monday in the Iranian capital, Tehran, between representatives of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan, the parties to the Mecca Defense Agreement. The meeting was described as positive.

These diplomatic moves coincided with rising tensions between Washington and Tehran in recent days, as U.S. President Donald Trump once again hinted at the possibility of launching a new military operation against Iran.
