Two Men Charged in Britain in Connection with the Fairford Air Base Incident

British prosecutors charged two men under the National Security Act on Tuesday in connection with an incident that occurred last September at RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force base used by the United States to launch strikes against Iran, according to an official statement.

The charges followed an announcement by British police that the two men had been rearrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service as part of the investigation into the incident.

Counterterrorism police said they had rearrested a 24-year-old British man who had previously been detained outside RAF Fairford, along with another man, aged 25, who holds both British and Iranian citizenship and had previously been arrested in London.

Laurence Taylor, head of the United Kingdom’s national counterterrorism policing network, said the investigation remained active and authorities were continuing to gather evidence. He added that the police position had not changed and that they considered Iranian state involvement in the case highly likely, according to Reuters.

U.S. bombers had used RAF Fairford to launch airstrikes against Iran before B-1 aircraft were withdrawn shortly after five British men were arrested outside the base, located in southwest England, in the early hours of September 27.

Police subsequently arrested two more men but later released all seven individuals on bail before the Counter Terrorism Policing unit announced on Tuesday that two of them had been detained again under the National Security Act.

Last week, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the activities surrounding RAF Fairford were likely coordinated from inside Iran, a claim denied by Iran’s ambassador to London.

Taylor acknowledged that authorities were aware the public still had unanswered questions, adding that they would disclose further information as soon as circumstances permitted.
